Maintaining tonsil hygiene

Care for the tonsils can significantly reduce problems associated with tonsil stones and help prevent their recurrence. Much like dental hygiene, regular professional treatment makes it possible to remove deposits that ordinary cleaning cannot reach.

Professional care

Suction jet

For tonsil hygiene, we recommend the modern method of irrigation using a suction jet. This device can remove fully formed stones as well as their early deposits at any stage of development. Treatment is gentle, quick and painless. Tonsil hygiene is carried out in two phases: stabilization and maintenance.

Stabilization phase

Tonsils are often in a chronic state for many years, so patience and targeted care are needed to allow them to regenerate. The aim is to stabilize the tonsils first, and only once their condition improves should treatment move to the maintenance phase.

We recommend undergoing 3 or 4 treatments at the following intervals:

  • 0–4–4: The first irrigation immediately, the second after 4 weeks, and another after 4 weeks.
  • 0–2–3–4: The first treatment immediately, then after 2 weeks, followed by 3 weeks and then 4 weeks. This option is suitable for more severe cases or if the patient wants a faster approach.

After these irrigations are completed, the overall results are assessed. Both the patient’s subjective relief and the objective findings during the procedure are taken into account. The transparent suction device makes it possible to see the amount and type of stones and debris removed. If the condition has improved significantly, the patient can move to the maintenance phase.

Maintenance phase

Tonsil stones do not form overnight – they develop gradually. New biofilm builds up on a small deposit, which then slowly calcifies. Over time, the stone grows larger, and the longer it remains in the tonsil, the more discomfort it causes. For this reason, the most effective prevention is to remove stones regularly, ideally at an early stage.

  • For long-term prevention, we recommend treatment once every 3 months.
  • The interval between treatments can always be adjusted according to the patient’s condition and individual rate of stone formation.

Supportive home care

Gargling

We recommend supporting tonsil hygiene with gargling (morning and evening) using a mouthwash containing active oxygen. Active oxygen has a disinfectant effect and helps break down bacteria in the crypts. Gargling itself also helps to mechanically dislodge surface stones.

Tongue scraper

Another useful aid is a tongue scraper, especially for cleaning the root of the tongue. This is where most debris accumulates, and it can transfer to the lower part of the tonsils. We recommend using a scraper regularly, ideally morning and evening.
